THE truth isn't always THEIR truth: Routine grooming and nail trims aren't abuse, quite the opposite! But try convincing a dog who thinks you’re coming at them with medieval torture devices! YIKES! If a pup perceives simple, non-invasive nail trims as a threat, they’ll react like it’s life or death, regardless of whether we know they are safe and comfortable. That’s where we, as pet parents, groomers, and veterinarians, step in—to guide them through with patience, skill, and a little compassion. 

Imagine getting to go to a spa every 6 weeks! Delightful, right?! Now imagine going to the dentist every 6–8 weeks for a root canal! No one would sign up for that! Understanding that each dog comes to us with their own personalities, life experiences, and both perceived and (unfortunately) some having experienced real-life trauma, is essential to leading any dog to success.  At Shag to Chic, we deeply understand, empathize and have created grooming solutions time and time again. We believe that an individualized session, tailored to each pet, is the best way to overcome many of these hurdles. Whether it's getting a puppy started off right with a freshen-up, a utilitarian trim for a dog who loathes brushing, a show trim for the pooch who loves sport their style, a compassion trim for an elderly dog or our "Softer"Approach"  for those who need breaks; our tailored approach eases anxieties, reverses trauma responses, and gives every dog the session they need. 

That’s why our salon works differently. We offer both the traditional start-to-finish approach and our softer approach to the grooming experience. Most of our small visitors who are accustomed to regular grooming, happily come for a 2-2.5-hour start-to-finish appointment spot, even if they have some extra needs. However, not everyone can handle that level of constant handling. Whether it be due to inexperience, anxiety or fear towards the process, or even due to size and coat type, we always have the option to employ our "Softer Approach" method. 

With our Softer Approach to grooming, the dog is dropped off in the morning, and we do everything in stages with compassion breaks. Your dog gets to set the pace. This way, they aren’t feeling rushed or expected to focus for hours straight. Our team often works together—one trims, another encourages, another distracts—whatever each dog needs. Many of our canine visitors have been "divorced" from other salons, being told they're just too difficult or aggressive. Shag to Chic believes every dog deserves a fair shake with a grooming experience tailored to them. We have the knowledgeable, skilled and compassionate team to make that happen!

About 50% of our Shaggy Pack have come to us with fear or anxiety toward grooming. That’s too many to ignore. By slowing things down, working as a team, and tailoring each experience, we help dogs build confidence not only with our stylists but with the grooming process itself. These life skills go far beyond the grooming table and lead to a more balanced and regulated pet.
